Useful Lawn Watering Tips
Everyone knows that without water, plants can dry up and die. But we notice that too many customers actually overwater their plantings since they are not educated on applying water properly. The truth is that too much water is as much harmful for the plants, as is shortage of water during drought conditions. If plants are overwatered, the parts of the plant submerged in water, particularly the roots, may rot or drown from lack of oxygen.
Here are some tips to ensure proper irrigation of your lawn.
- Ensure that your plants are getting enough water, but do not drown them with water.
- Try to water your plants early in the morning. This ensures that water lost through evaporation is minimized.
- Plants vulnerable to diseases and insect problems should be watered in the morning, so that the rising sun can dry off the water, still on the leaves and growth of fungus is avoided.
- Your aim should be to maintain the soil's moisture and to ensure it does not dry out entirely. Keep in mind however, that not all plants and grasses are subject to this rule and it is up to you to learn about what's in your yard.
- Your lawn can do with less water if the temperature is moderate and humidity is high. Our watering curve in Ohio is not level, so your programming should not be the same throughout the summer it should have the valleys in the Spring and Fall and should peak in the Summer when temps are high.
- Young or new plants need more moisture to encourage the growth of buds. These ought to be watered lightly but more often so set your irrigation system accordingly.
- Place a rain gauge at a particular spot in your lawn to learn how much watering the area needs every week. Since some sprinklers distribute water less uniformly, it is a good idea to place rain gauges at various spots on the lawn and compare the level of water each one collects. According to the readings you record, you will know if the frequency of your sprinkler system needs to be adjusted.
