Common Lawn Sprinkler Problems

With the summer already upon us, it is necessary to ensure that your sprinkler system is working properly, if you want your lawn plants and grass to survive the relentless heat. Making sure that your sprinkler is in order will also help you avoid greater problems in the middle of the season.

The first thing post mowing, you will need to turn on each sprinkler station for a few minutes, by using the manual setting of the sprinkler. Then walk past each sprinkler zone carefully and look for the following signs that point to underlying problems:

1. Wrong Placement of Heads:
Watch out for wrongly positioned sprinkler heads that are wasting precious water, by discharging water onto places beyond the lawn, such as the driveway.
2. Obstructed Heads:
Growth of grass around sprinkler heads can negatively impact the spray pattern resulting in uneven distribution of water. It is essential to have a pop-up sprinklers which reach a 4 inch height, so that tall grass does not pose as an obstruction. You must make it a point to trim plant material which is changing the spray pattern significantly, preventing other plants or areas from receiving water.
3. Broken Parts:
Be on the look-out for visible broken parts, which indicate that your sprinkler system may have been damaged. Have these parts replaced as soon as you can, ensure that the spray pattern isn't skewered and the irrigation system is delivering optimal performance.
4. Blocked Nozzles:
Over time, dirt, small stones, etc. can block sprinkler heads, or reduce the flow of water through them. If any heads are seriously clogged, all you need to do is to turn off the zone, open the nozzle and wash it thoroughly with water. Make sure to clear the filter screen as well. Put back the nozzle and filter screen when you are done and see if the spray head is aimed right.
5. Improper coverage:
To ensure that your lawn sprinkler system is working properly, you must see to it that each sprinkler head's spray is within reach of the sprinkler head that is next to it. Too less of water can cause the problem of dry spots, while too much obviously results in water wastage.
