Maintenance of Lawn Sprinkler Systems

Ensuring that your in-ground sprinkler system is functioning properly for the upcoming summer months is necessary if you want your lawn to be lush, green and healthy. Here are the steps you need to follow to keep your sprinkler system in good shape.

Maintenance when the spring arrives

Step 1
Plug in the control unit/clock.
Step 2
Schedule the proper time on the clock.
Step 3
Check your "back flow prevention valve" and ensure its functioning right. The back flow prevention valve restricts the supply of water, such that water from the public water supply can enter your sprinkler system but water that is already in the system does not go back to its source. Hence the valve prevents the contamination of the public water supply. Also find out if your city stipulates an annual backflow test, for homeowners and have it done.
Step 4
Turn on the water supply. Before turning on the water supply make sure that all plugs are tight and you have applied new Teflon tape to ones that were removed for the Winterization process. Also make sure that the Backflow device is ready for the water to be turned on since it is recommended that all valves be left in the 45 degree angle if you do not correct this, your backflow will discharge water and if left as is the system will not be under full water pressure. Please refer to your Operations Manual found in our Customer Care section for more information.
Step 5
Switch on the sprinkler system and let it run for a short while ensuring coverage of all of the zones.
Step 6
Check to see if each sprinkler head is functioning properly and distributing water evenly. Sometimes grass can cover the sprinkler head, creating problems in the popping up process.
Step 7
Carefully examine the sprinkler head and check to see if the filter screen placed at its bottom end is clogged with debris. This can reduce water pressure considerably; hence cleaning of the clogged filter screens is in order. Also you should audit your irrigation system every few years to determine precise watering applications.

Lawn Sprinkler Maintenance Before the Winter sets in

Step 1
Turn off the water supply inside the home for the irrigation system.
Step 2
Drain the water from the system. While a few systems do offer an automatic draining feature, one cannot depend on them entirely. It is much more effective (not to mention faster!) to use an air compressor. The compressor works by forcing air into the lawn sprinkler system, which pushes all the water out. For each zone, this has to be followed for five-ten minutes until one can observe a fine mist rising from the sprinkler heads. You can contact RI Lawn Sprinklers to have the system done per manufacturers directions.
Step 3
To ensure the durability of the electrical components, disconnect the power supply for the upcoming winter months.
